To discuss about Education, at first we must go back to the ancient concept of Education. History speaks that there was no well-organized education system like that of these days. Common people had no opportunity to reach the light of education. Only the rich and the people of higher status or the children of land-lords monopolized the field of education.
India was totally different from all other countries in the world. The caste system and Varna Vyavastha was in force under the rule of Aryan Brahmins here. They had the exclusive authority of acquiring and imparting education. For Shudras, it was illegal to learn or teach. If they had learnt something avoiding this law, their tongue had been cut off or melted lead was poured inside their ears as a punishment. It was an official regulation as well as religious injunction.
(Just imagine of a country where learning and teaching was strongly prohibited for the majority common people. That means it was fundamental purpose of the ruling section and the Brahminical religion to keep people uneducated and ignorant.)
The history of the world has provided us two source of education:
1. The first one is the Knowledge of Prophets.
2. The other one is the knowledge of philosophers, scientist, social reformers etc.
The knowledge that human being has received from Prophets was provided by Almighty Allah Himself through His angels. In spite of great difficulties, Prophets preached God-revealed knowledge to the human kind of all stages and tried their best to make people educated, aware, righteous and virtuous. Their knowledge is considered to be authentic and pure.
On the other side, we have found the education that was discovered by philosophers, scientists or social reformers by their hard work. They analyzed the consequences of history and achieved multi-sided experiences by which they tried to solve their social or political affairs. As their knowledge was derived from imagination and experiments, it can not be considered to be authentic and final; but must deserves to be honored and respect.
Education plays the most important role in developing human being. In all the times throughout the world, education guided humanity to the development. The more a society came in touch of education, the more they prospered; be the education of Prophets or that of philosophers.
Let’s have a look on quotations of famous scholars about education and its principle objective:
According to Aristotle, “Education is the creation of healthy mind in a sound body that generates an essence inside men to accept the truth.”
Philosopher Rousseau said, “The purpose of education is to help people pass up artificiality and build a normal life.”
Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S:) said, “It is obligatory (Farj) for every Muslim men and women to acquire knowledge (Ilm).”
The commission organized by UNESCO reported, “Education has four purposes:
1. Learning to know
2. Learning to do
3. Learning to live together
4. Learning to be.”
Apart from these, some other quotations of scholars and learned persons need to be remembered, such as:
“Education is the backbone of a society.”
“Education is inborn right of all.”
“Education is a powerful key which can open every closed door.”
To summarize above discussions, it may be said that no one can understand their own identity, nor can realize the purpose of their existing without education. The lack of education makes man unaware of his society, religion, culture etc. One can not differentiate the truth from false, justice from injustice and legal from illegal without education. In short, a man can not be civilized if the light of education does not reach him.
The history of education is not comparatively more ancient than that of these days in India. During the rule of Muslim in India, Madrasas (Muslim religious schools) were the centre of education, which were open for all irrespective of Muslims, non-Muslims and whoever wanted to learn. For example: Brahmin son, Ram Mohan Roy learnt Urdu, Farsi and Arabic in a Madrasa run by Muslims in Patna; Farsi was the official language of India then.
To be sure, most of Brahmins, Kshatriya, Vaishya and upper caste people are educated including their women, while those people are mostly backward in education who belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes in India. Excluding exceptions, Muslims are very far from the ground of education; men are backwards in learning, women are not to be mentioned. Indian Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains are educationally more advanced than Muslims.
Now a question arises that why will Muslims remain ignorant in this modern era? Muslims, who once ruled India for centuries, are defeated, deprived and humiliated. Muslims are helpless in India today.
Education is the key to unlock every closed door.
